Toronto: Yay for Diversity!

Most of Toronto is pretty liberal. Every year,
the city throws one of the world’s largest gay pride festivals, which is attended by people of
all sexual orientations. In addition to the
country’s economy, our downtown is the
centre of Canada’s entertainment, media and advertising industries. Plus, Toronto is the
most multicultural city on the planet, and
the metropolitan manifestation of one of the liberal Canadian politicians’ favourite terms: “cultural mosaic”.

Toronto is sometimes hated on by the rest of
the country for possessing a so-called centre-
of-the universe mentality, but the city is, in
many ways, a microcosm of everything Canada aspires to be. Diversity is a defining part of ‘Torontopia’, and after decades of an open-
arms immigration policy, the nation’s largest
city has developed a wide spectrum of ethnic neighbourhoods. Even these are anything but homogenous.
