Becky Fixter
Becky was born in Dorval, Quebec. She moved to Ontario at the age of 2 and was raised in Kitchener and Thornhill, Ontario. She received her formal education at York University in Toronto, where she obtained a B.A. with a major in Psychology.
She subsequently trained and worked as a potter for several years. In time she found herself lured by the freedom and creative spontaneity of abstract painting. She traded in her potter’s wheel for a palette knife and painter’s brush.
The artist’s social psychology background has strongly influenced her self-taught artistic expression. Her method of laying down and scraping away subsequent layers of paint results in simultaneous, contrasting effects of emergence and deconstruction. Through use of light, colour, space and form, the artist explores personal questions regarding energy, interaction and collective perspective.
She works in close harmony with nature, in a home studio where she resides with her husband and 5 cats.
